Amazing Feedback During Lockdown

(We Know Who You Are)

The following is an email we received from one of our members, such lovely feedback.

A darker part of me spots irony, this week’s episode being that during a week where we celebrate large-scale herd immunity for our population against Covid, I pick up my annual cold and won’t make it to this evening’s boxing class. So I figured I’d spend the time on this concoction, by way of small thanks, I hope you enjoy it.
.
1 year on and not being directly part of social media circles, I thought it was time to offer some feedback and general blurb about our online experience as Function First space cadets. As a family we have been pretty active on screen, I wouldn’t say we’re part of the furniture but you probably know ours quite well by now.
.
Early last year, like everyone, we were watching this new virus in the far East, wondering when it would arrive on our doorstep and in what capacity. We decided our best course of action was, as a family, to improve our overall health if catching some new flu type thing was a possibility. Starting some form of fitness regime also seemed like a good plan, to tie in with periods of isolation at home.
.
I’ll be honest Joe Wicks entered the conversation as an option, along with running, weight training, and Zumba. The latter not really being an option for the uncoordinated such as me.
Fortunately for us, you guys were on it, so my better half suggested we join in with our daughter’s online kickboxing class, to keep her motivated and give us a baby step into something new. Zoom was new, kickboxing was new and I felt old, so we thought it better to join in with the grown-ups next time.
.
The following evening, we were greeted by a screen full of strangers and the two coaches, who we knew a little bit from our weekly visits to the gym with our daughter. In a nutshell, I’d say we were welcomed, the coaches were patient but fun and the lesson flew by. I ached a bit the next day but we were there again the next evening. Over the next few weeks, we got to know some of the other Zoomers. The ones we didn’t get to chat with still being welcome faces to see in the evenings on screen.
In the interim period, we also gave the Saturday kettlebell conditioning class a try, where Matt along with wingman Joe, has managed to combine interesting exercises with humor/general knowledge and punk. I’m still not really sure what happened during the first few weeks of this class, it was all a blur.
.
To help alleviate said blur, later on, meditation became a welcome part of our morning routine too. Pardon the pun, although often closed in practice, our eyes have been opened here. We have both experienced and can see huge benefits to the mental conditioning aspect. I learned something new every day.,
.
Unfortunately, I then had a run-in, or should I say more of a fall-off, a unicycle. So had to bow out of kettlebells but my wife is still there every week online.
.
My clumsiness then extended itself further by way of a pretty decent BBQ burn. I’m not aware of the origins of the ‘roundhouse’ kick but I may have also reinvented an online version early on in my early escapades when a loose leg did actually result in kicking either a dog or a child ‘around the house. So we bought a kick bag to save on visits from animal cruelty etc.
.
I should point out that we have three generations and various animals roaming around our house whilst we Zoom – things can get hectic at times.
.
Speaking as an onliner and novice, I am quite sure that all of us who have taken part at whatever level has been inspired by the energy and dedication that Dom and Stu show consistently every lesson without fail. Obviously, it is fun but alongside that, there is a high level of professionalism.
.
One observation I would make is that many people globally will have spent large amounts of time Zooming for work, pleasure, or whatever. Getting back to face-to-face communication maybe a little weird and take a little time. So I apologise in advance if, when I finally get back to the gym, I just stand and stare at you like a zombie.
.
As a small business owner myself, I enjoy looking at how others operate, It was quite clear that Function First, like proverbial chameleons, have adapted to the new environment in front of them. Aside from the obvious health benefits, I’m pretty sure that some of this energy has rubbed off onto me in my own workplace too.
.
And as a family, for a variety of different reasons the whole thing slotted in well for us and at the right time in our lives.
.
To end where I began, with irony, having never been a member of a gym in my life, at a unique time when every other gym I know of has been closed, I have visited my gym on average 4 times a week now for over a year.
.
Obviously Paula/Becky, you’ll get the chocolates.
